The first weekend in January is quickly becoming a big event on the Cranbrook sports landscape. our 18U and 17U teams suited up at our very own JPHL Showcase in Cranbrook. Last year, the first edition of the event, had one division, seven teams. This year the entire prairie divisions for both levels were in attendance at Western Financial Place and Memorial Arena.
The weekend highlighted the professionalism, resilience, and community spirit within our program. Both teams played in front of a supportive crowd of friends and family, capturing memorable moments and celebrating wins that reflected how far the program has come. The positive energy in the rink and surrounding community made it a truly rewarding experience for players and families alike.
Following Cranbrook, the 18U team traveled to Spruce Grove for the Jaxon Joseph Memorial Tournament, which ran in conjunction with the BCHL Showcase, facing strong competition from across Western Canada. While the results didn’t always go our way, the weekend emphasized growth, learning, and the competitive spirit of our players.
KHA battled to the very end in the opening game, ultimately falling in a shootout. The team showed determination and kept pace with a strong opponent, demonstrating the competitive spirit that defines our program.
The team bounced back with a solid victory. Effort, teamwork, and strong systems came together to create one of our most complete performances of the weekend.
This challenging matchup reinforced the importance of composure, smart decision-making, and playing within our structure under pressure. The team learned valuable lessons about maintaining consistency against skilled opponents.
The final game of the weekend tested our players against top-tier competition. While the score didn’t go our way, the experience was invaluable, providing insight into the pace, intensity, and skills required at the next level.
Players had the opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of BCHL executives, gaining exposure and feedback that will help guide their development. General Manager Kelvin Cech also had the privilege of serving as a guest coach for Team World in the BCHL All-Star game, offering a firsthand view of the next level and lessons we can bring back to the team.
Passing and Pace - Quick puck movement creates opportunities. Players who hesitate or try to do too much individually limit their chances.
Line Changes and Awareness - Managing shifts effectively helps maintain energy and structure. This is a habit we’ll continue to reinforce.
Work Away from the Puck - Success depends on effort without the puck. Players who actively get open create space and improve team performance.
As we move into the final stretch of the season, we’ll focus on these key skills while managing energy and building toward the playoffs. The team has consistently shown that with focus, effort, and teamwork, they can rise to any challenge.
Thank you to all families, supporters, and volunteers who attended both the Cranbrook Showcase and Jaxon Joseph Memorial Tournament. Your energy and support are a key part of the positive culture that makes this program special.
